President Joko Widodo officially appointed a Muhammadiyah figure, Syafiq Mughni to become the Head of the Presidential Special Envoy for Interreligious and Civilization Dialogue and Cooperation (UKP-DKAAP). Syafiq's appointment was to replace Din Syamsuddin who had resigned from the position of UKP-DKAAP on 21 September.
Based on the official UKP-DKAAP acceptance received by CNNIndonesia.com on Friday (26/10), Syafiq's appointment was based on the Presidential Decree Number 52 / M Year 2018. After being officially appointed by the president, Syafiq chose to be non-active from his position as Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership in the Relationship between Religion and Civilization.
Jokowi also revealed that he had commissioned Syafiq to develop interfaith dialogue and cooperation at home and abroad.
Not only that, Syafiq was mandated to promote the lives of Indonesian Muslims based on the principle of Wasathiyah or the life of moderate Islam.
It is known, Syafiq himself has a background as an Islamic intellectual. He was recorded as Professor of Islamic Civilization at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University in Surabaya and had served as Chancellor of the University of Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo.
In addition, Syafiq had also served as Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership in East Java and Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership.
